A Total Conversion Modification of Farcry.  Developed by myself and six other students over a period of six months at the University of Salford as the final year project. (2007)

Synopsis

Take on the role of Biochemical Scientist Lucy Rhea, as part of the Extra-Terrestrial Reconnaissance Authority (ETRA).  On a routine mission to evaluate the planet designated as "Hestia" for its possible risk/benefit to humanity, the Advance team drop ships mysteriously lose control and crash on the planet.  As the only survivor of your ship you must explore and survive on this alien world and discover what caused the drop ship malfunctions.

Our development group was known as 'Shark in a Cube'.  With little experience of modding we undertook the ambitious task of a total conversion, which meant that every aspect of the game was new content.  We also wanted to add in additional gameplay elements.

Our aim with the gamplay twists was to detract from the traditional 'shoot everything that moves' scenario that seems to have taken over the FPS genre.  We wanted players to feel that expolration and non-violent approaches were equally viable, and in some cases much more effective.

This was achieved by adding in a fuel cell gauge for the player's suit, which acted as both a power source and the player's shield.  Due to the hostile atmosphere of the planet, this fuel cell slowly drains over time encouraging the player to progress and explore to seek out special 'ethanol pods' which naturally grow on the planet and can be used to power the fuel cell.

The indigenous life of the planet are highly receptive to the electrical energy and the player is therefore more visible when the fuel cell is fully charged.  On the flipside the player can eject the fuel cell making them almost invisible to indigenous life while sacrificing the protective shield and power for scanning equipment.
